The best in the series. The most un-novel of novels, the most uncaring for audience, expectations and the usual tricks. Only life in all its harshness, and duty over pleasure, love over happiness, fate over hopeless wish.
Those between middle-aged people, civil state: divorced, which partner for the sake of a) a little sex on Mondays after the cheap session at the local theater, b) having someone to show the world (and themselves) they’re not alone in the world, and c) being able to produce some pictures from the weekend at the office. Of course no living together, no bonding, no commitment, no sharing —just intersecting.
Very convenient, and very low-cost.
